DENJI: denji and makima's relationship started off and remained completely one-sided pre-control devil reincarnation, but it's important so that we can understand makima. first off: makima never cared for denji. he's nothing to her but a vessel for something she actually did want, so he ended up being something of a stone in the way. she took him in and gave him fabricated affection, manipulated him, threatened him and groomed him, gave him a found family and promises of a romantic & sexual relationship only to brutally rip everything from him and leave him hollow enough to summon chainsaw man. that was her plan all along, and part of this is because of the upbringing makima had with the japanese government as well as her nature. denji confirms that he still has love for makima despite everything she's done— and perhaps under different circumstances (such as makima's post death), she could've been different. the control devil has a dream: to form equal relationships with others and form a family, which couldn't be accomplished because the only relationships makima knew how to forge were out of fear or subordination (thanks to being the control devil). this goes for others, as well; makima has profound adoration for humans in the same sense that humans love dogs. they're cute, but they're smart. to care for them and make their world better, she has to act in a way where she can't be them but she can be like them, kind of like how an alien would read a guide and try to act human and blend in with them. it's weird. removing some of her power barriers is what I hope will help her get closer to this goal she had— because with it, as seen with denji's relationship and other's, is a huge reason that kept her from that.
POCHITA/CHAINSAW MAN: the only being that makima sees as her equal, and thus strives to share that desire with him. to do that, though, makima had to bulldoze right through a 17 year old boy and his close friends, a few other dudes— and that's okay! because in the end, makima would have what she always wanted: a family (in her twisted vision). she says she's a fan, calls him the hero of hell because of his ability to erase evils by consuming them, and looks to use his abilities to make a better world for humans. it's a shame that from the start, makima never really understood pochita/csm or why he made a contract with denji, who was a lower life form, a dog, and not her. when she realized that csm wasn't the idealised csm she created in her quest for an equal relationship, makima seemingly gave up. before she died, she could've fought back, but was at peace that the nightmare crumbling her life up would be over.
Character Personality Through Key Moments
(2+) Positive Experiences: despite what many say about makima (especially when seeing her through a human moral lense), she does express layers of kindness that can be seen through the way she views humans. in makima's mind (and in others who fear control), she's above humans. she sees them the same way humans see dogs— she likes them, though, and her base friendliness is proved through her appearance. the more human-looking a devil is, the more docile and friendly toward humans it is. she manipulates many of them so that she can live side by side with them— acting like them, caring for them, doing certain things that she doesn’t really need to do and considering their well-being as a whole and striving to make their world better. under questionable circumstances, but, it was a goal of hers during the course of chainsaw man. makima also has wits; i wouldn’t say she’s a genius, but she is smart and knows how to read the majority of situations (mostly by repeating or mimicry; an example of this can be when she explained to denji what it means to have an intimate relationship with someone that was very believable, like a scene from a movie or book, vs actually being unable to recognize or understands pochita’s feelings for denji). she devised an entire plan to destroy denji’s psych, she built herself up from the bottom to the top of the public safety bureau, so surely, she has the brains to do rational things and fake emotional ones.
(2+) Negative Experiences: through human eyes, makima is horridly manipulative and she does it nearly all the time. to makima, what she’s doing when she emotionally manipulates someone isn’t bad, or done in ill will with nefarious scheming involved. if anything, she believes she’s doing so out of necessity to achieve her goals and even one’s focused on a greater good. manipulating or sacrificing someone is either for their good or for humanity as a whole, so it’s an end that’s thoroughly justified in her head (when she controls aki and angel devil without second thoughts to defeat the gun devil, for example, and tells them “sorry, but i had no choice”. tied with this is makima’s lack of empathy. she looks human, but— she’s not human. she’s a devil. when makima kills power and brings denji back into her apartment, she acts like nothing has happened, and when denji asks, shocked, if it was all a dream, makima laughs. she throws her head back and guffaws because it’s amusing, like how a dog whines when it’s separated from its kind. not because she finds amusement in suffering, but because . . . it’s cute! plus, it was another step toward bringing chainsaw man to her. his feelings didn’t really matter to her in the first place, but the result did.
Deer Country Attributes
• Canon Powers: makima is the control devil, a manifestation of the fear of domination. as such, her abilities are so highly extensive and rooted into control of something or another that all of them are currently unknown. the bullet points below are the ones we are aware of. due to the nature of makima's abilities, i want to nerf a good portion of them to also help her develop in a different way over time.
• control: makima, as the control devil, can control any being she considers inferior to her. when under such abilities, she can force people to make contracts with her and use their abilities or use devils, slightly alter personalities, use animals like rats and birds to listen in on conversations, and so on. obviously, this is incredibly god-moddy and rather difficult to play when not everyone wants to be controlled (and, come on, controlling people all the time doesn't change things for makima!). i'd like for makima to initially have full control over herself; this would mean control over her emotions, control over her body and mind, as long as corruption is none to light. mind control would only be able to extend to others through player character approval.
• contracts: as a devil, makima can make contracts with humans that require an exchange of sacrifice from one side (offering something that may be valuable to makima, such as an ability) and then makima offering her service or ability in turn. contracts cannot be broken or gone back on, but due to game mechanics, this might change with, maybe, the death of the contracting character at the player's discretion.
• superhuman strength: possibly due to both being a devil and makima having complete control of her body and how to use it.
• enhanced smell: from being a devil; makima knows how to distinguish people this way.
• regeneration through blood: makima can regenerate and heal herself through blood consumption of any kind.
